RGR Sport has given their home crowd of Mexican fans the ultimate gift today by qualifying on pole for the start of the 6 Hours of Mexico presented by AT&T, the newest addition to the FIA World Endurance Championship calendar.

The Mexican team knew they would be at the top of the field after Brazilian, Bruno Senna, put down the fastest lap time of the LMP2 field in the first official practice session of the weekend. Senna was able to top his quickest time after three clean flying laps in qualifying with a lap time of 1:34.688.

With the Mexican crowd populating the grand stands, Team Owner and promoter of the event, Ricardo Gonzalez closed the qualifying session in what ended up being a dramatic finish. With less than five minutes to go, the #36 Alpine Signatech car made contact with the wall resulting in a red flag. Gonzalez brought the #43 Nissan Ligier JS P2 machine back to the pits after running a lap time of 1:36.283 briefly before the session went back to green with just enough time for the rest of the field to get in one more flying lap.

Finally, the tension let loose after Technical Director, Gautier Boutellier, came over the radio to inform Gonzalez and the rest of the team that the 20 minute session had officially come to a close, meaning the only Mexican team in FIA World Endurance Championship would be starting from the first spot on the grid with a combined average lap of 1:35.485.

Race day activities will start as early as 11:00 on Saturday with the opening of the pit lane to the fans followed by the official autograph session at 11:15. History will be made, as the green flag for the 6 Hours of Mexico presented by AT&T will wave at 13:30.

*The FIA World Endurance Championship requires one silver rated driver and one platinum or gold rated driver to participate in the qualifying session. The fastest lap is recorded from each driver with the average of those two times serving as the teams official qualifying mark.

Team Owner/Driver – Ricardo Gonzalez

“I’m very happy for qualifying. We knew we had a good pace, but obviously Alpine and G-Drive are very fast. We had a few engine issues in practice two, so we didn’t know how that would affect us in qualifying. Everything worked out and I’m extremely excited about this result in front of the Mexican crowd.”

Driver – Bruno Senna

“We are in pole position at our home race after a fantastic effort by the team. Everyone has done a great job since the beginning of the weekend. I was confident with the car ever since the first lap I did and I love going into a qualifying session knowing what I have underneath my seat. I was really pushing in qualifying with low fuel and new tires, which was pure pleasure.

For sure there is a lot of pressure, but I am very happy that we are here. Well done to Ricardo for a great drive and to everyone on the team.”

Sporting Director – Toni Calderon

“There’s obviously no better way to start the weekend than this. It really is amazing to be on pole at our home track. It’s still hard to believe, but it shows just how hard everyone has been working and how important this race is for us.

Now we will celebrate for just a little bit and then go straight back to focusing on winning this race.”
