The 2016 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship has kicked off in a similar fashion to the ending of the 2015 campaign. Driving rain plagued Thursday afternoon's qualifying session for the 54th annual Rolex 24 at Daytona.

Dane Cameron led the team in qualifying turning in the sixth fastest time in the prototype class with the No. 31 Whelen Chevrolet Corvette Daytona Prototype. Teammate and defending series champion João Barbosa qualified the No. 5 Mustang Sampling Corvette DP in 11th position.

"The heavy rain that was occurring during our qualifying session made the risk of damaging a car very high," said team manager Gary Nelson. "Looking at the forecast of dry conditions for the race. The Action Express team took a conservative approach to qualifying in the wet. Both of our drivers were extremely cautious with their cars and kept their focus on finishing out the session. We came to Daytona International Speedway focused on winning the Rolex 24 and following qualifying, that goal is still attainable because our drivers took care of our Corvette DPs."

The 54th annual Rolex 24 at Daytona will get underway on Saturday, January 30 at 2:40 p.m. ET. The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship competitors will have night practice Thursday and a final session on Friday morning in preparation for the race.
