My summer season is coming to an end and as a racer that means we are in full swing for meeting with companies to retain and add new sponsors and locking down rides. I have had an interesting transition this year as I have spent most of my career racing stock cars but over the last two years I have been invited to race with multiple teams in sports cars. Recently I raced up at Brainerd International Raceway (BIR) and it was a blast as this was my first time racing on the Donnybrooke course which is 3.1 miles versus the standard short course.
The race was a 12 hour event and we knew fuel mileage and tire wear was going to play a large role in this event. One advantage for the team was with my extensive oval background I was able to assist my teammates with getting comfortable with entering into the banked corners (turns 1 and 10) with less braking and allow the banking to do it's job and catch you. This gave us an advantage and it showed as we made a lot of passes on the high side especially in turn 1. We ran well most of the day but we were going through tires quicker than originally planned. After making air pressure adjustments our tire wear increased and we picked up more speed. The team was running top 15 all day even after making our pit stops, however, just as Ben was finishing his stint the engine blew. Before the engine let go we looked at our pit strategy and speed and it looked like we had a top 10 finish. This would have qualified us into the Championship race as this team was the defending Champs from 2014. It is definitely great to be apart of a Championship caliber team.

Moving into the fall and winter seasons, we are preparing the kart again and had a chance to get my kid out in a kart for a second run. He picked up another .5 mph average on the course and seemed to get more comfortable behind the wheel. It is still a blast to drive on the same track with him and watch him learn the sport that I love.
Recently I had the privilege to meet with some of the new students at the local Technical College that are going to school to be in the automotive field and we discussed some of the differences of getting into motorsports especially the networking piece. It was great to learn about some of the obstacles some of them had to overcome to get back into school. I have already been asked to come back again next semester.
